The Strength of the Sword

Early this week I talked about our gentle role as women, today I am talking about a subject very dear to my heart: adventurous womanhood. The sphere of women is a HUGE one, we may make the home run smoothly, but out role goes far beyond that when needed.

And the LORD God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him." Genesis 2:18

Comparable, helper. Those two words say something that is mostly overlooked by conservatives these days. If we are to help or husband, father, and brothers we need to be able to do the things that they do. If we are incapable of doing "manly" things we are not helpful to them are we? I quoted "manly" because we are not men and should not act like men, but certain things that men do we as ladies should be able to do too along with and under the authority of men.

There is a couple in my church who have gone hunting together. The husband loves and enjoys hunting and wanted his wife to come along for company and assistance. The wife went along and they had a great time. (I don't know if they shot anything or not, they never get to that part of the story). If the wife didn't know how to handle herself on a hunting trip, she would have been a useless burden to her husband. The moral of the story? We should be skillful at things that are primarily "manly" so we can help the men in our life.

Here are some verses I like about being a strong woman

Strength and honor are her clothing; She shall rejoice in time to come. Proverbs 31:25

She girds herself with strength, And strengthens her arms. Proverbs 31:17

And so you know I am not taking these things out of context, these passages are talking about the ideal virtuous woman found in Proverbs 31.

One of my favorite accounts in the Bible is found in Judges chapter 4. It is about a woman named Jael. She killed Israels greatest political enemy through her hospitality. She invites him into her families dwelling and gives him a drink and tells him to rest. While he's sleeping peacefully, she uses a hammer to drive a tent peg into his forehead. Now that is a story not told at VBS or Sunday School!

So ladies, we can't be hiding behind our domestic duties, we need to be out and get dirty with our men too!

P.S. I am writing this as I am waiting for my first batch of cheese ever to drain! If it turns out well, I might post the recipe here. I hate waiting....

  1. Hey Victoria!

Well I think I set everything up ok! Nothing exploded. Thank GOD! So here I am, commenting...trying to...lol...on this lovely post that i have just now read. I agree....women SHOULD be able to help out. Under the appropriate authority figure, us girls should be able to know what to do. We are the helpers...so we should help, right?! I had to smile...at the "manly" bit, but I know exactly what you meant. :) Good thoughts, my dear.
