Swordfighting: A Battle of the Mind

Sword fighting is cool, but does it have a real purpose?
I firmly believe it does.
Sure, it physically strengthens your muscles, it improves eye hand coordination, heightens strategic thinking, and all that good stuff, but that aside, sword fighting has a far deeper meaning.

It is the physical embodiment of a spiritual truth.

Let me elaborate. We battle everyday, in our minds that is. I could write a paragraph explaining this, but let me set up a hypothetical scenario.
You are clothes shopping (this example will really only apply to girls, sorry guys) and your in the fitting room trying on this dress. You put it on and look in the mirror. The dress hugs your curves and shows what it's not supposed to be showing. You could really turn heads if you wore it out. You stare at your reflection, thoughts racing. A part of you longs to be seen in that dress and a part of you knows that would not be right.
There's our battle scene, right there! Your new man in Christ is sword fighting with your old sin nature. The outcome of this sword fight is completely up to you. You can certainly call on Jesus to give you the strength you need to destroy your flash in this case, but the final decision is up to you. Put the dress back on the rack or wear it and get the kind of attention you really don't want.

Now switch out that little story with whatever you struggle with. Any point in time when your flesh is battling your spirit. Remember to sword fight.

What is really funny is that as I am typing this my dad is watching Prince Caspian and I hear swords clashing and arrows zipping around, the perfect soundtrack to this post.

Take up your sword and fight my brothers and sisters.

  1. Victoria,

I really like your analogy! We are, indeed, in a spiritual battle and need to continually 'put on the full armor of God, so that we may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil" (Ephesians 6:11).

Thank you for your encouragement to all of us to choose what is right in the sight of the Lord.
